The Reading and Literacy Clinic is directed by Susan C. Lowell, M.A., B.C.E.T., an esteemed professional in the field of educational assessment of Specific Learning Disabilities including reading disorders and dyslexia. With extensive experience as a Fulbright Senior Specialist Professor, adjunct professor, and Board Certified Educational Therapist, Ms. Lowell brings a wealth of knowledge to the clinic.

Ms. Lowell holds an M.A. magna cum laude in Educational Psychology from the University of Connecticut, where she received clinical training under the Dr. Isabelle Liberman. She completed her clinical internship at Newington Children’s Hospital in Newington, CT, further honing her expertise in the field of educational assessment. As a testament to her commitment and leadership, Ms. Lowell has served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and President of the North Carolina Branch of IDA. Her contributions to the field have been invaluable, and her dedication extends beyond her clinical practice. During her service at IDA, Ms. Lowell was the lead author on the IDA book, Basic Facts About Assessment of Dyslexia: Testing for Teaching and the author of the IDA Fact Sheet, ‘Assessment of Dyslexia.’

Ms. Lowell’s passion for teacher education is further evidenced by her tenure as an adjunct faculty member at Simmons University, Bay Path University, and Buffalo State University, where she taught graduate-level courses on reading research, assessment of reading and written language, and reading instruction for U.S. and international school teachers. Her expertise in reading skill development, dyslexia, and reading disorders has led her to be a sought- after speaker, symposium chair, and keynote speaker at national and international reading conferences.

Ms. Lowell offers on-site consultations in literacy for both U.S. and international schools. Her commitment to empowering educators and students extends globally as she provides literacy coursework, workshops, and professional development programs specifically designed for international schools. In recognition of her expertise, Ms. Lowell was invited to serve as an Associate to the Advisory Committee on Exceptional Children of the Office of Overseas Schools for the U.S. Department of State. Additionally, she works as a consultant for the National Center on Improving Literacy, a U.S. Department of Education website, contributing her guidance and knowledge to the parent question and answer segment entitled “Ask The Expert.”
